survival " to do " list

i don't know how many times i've read something
or watched a tv program and said to myself, " i should try that someday "

well, i'm actually gonna make a list
not sure if i'll get a chance to put some of these items into practice

gotta start somewhere:

gather and eat cattails
gather and eat tree bark
make and learn to use a sling
field-dress large game
try my hand at flint knapping ( more than 15 minutes )
use Calcium Hypochlorite to disinfect water and use that water for 2-3 days

i know there's more, just can't think of anything else right now

feel free to add your own

Not quite in the same vein, but my current 'to do' list:

Change out electric cooktop to gas (ordering this weekend)
Fill current propane tank to capacity, consider getting second 500 gal tank
Build basic rain catch system to salvage water from gutters
Dig pond in back yard large enough for water supply and talipia farming (getting bids next week)
PTO genset for tractor to act as primary, already have portable diesel for secondary.
Pole Barn
Greenhouse
Battery bank with large inverter (phase 1)
Solar Panels (phase 2)

Unfortunately, my list is getting damn expensive. Got the basics mostly covered, not going to starve, doing maintenance restocking now, with occasional adds

Re: survival " to do " list

Make dandelion root wine
Trap and process squirrels and rabbits
Get the roof->downspout->rainbarrel water collection system built and operational
Set up the root cellar
Build a hoophouse attached to the house for winter gardening
Get the well fixed
Fence in the back yard, install intrusion detection measures, ?another dog?
Plant windbreaks
Put up firewood to cure for next winter
Set up additional raised bed gardens
Dehydrate and store garden seeds in per year groups
Put a gate across driveway entrance

...

I'm sure I've forgotten half the list... :thumb.aspx:

C-G, check your local bookstore for the SAS survival guide. It's a mini pocket book, loaded with good stuff. I'll see if I can't find my copy for the publisher details.

Glad to see I am not the only one that feels a little overwhelmed with a to do list. I run a landscape commercial grounds maintenance company, and have only 3 weeks until will be working Loooong days. Decided not to get a crew leader this year, so will be able to save alot of money, but will be working my arse off.

My list:
> drop 6-8 trees in back yard to provide more light and garden area ( cut for fire wood)
> make greenhouse, attached to back of home.( looking forward to this:)
>purchase long term food preps, 6gal pails beans, rice, wheat & back up grinder
>make a bunch of 5 gal bucket planters for tomatoe plants.
> Finish privacy fence around rear of house ( only 180' to go)
>create area for fuel storage/4-6 cord firewood storage
>finish plan and build outdoor oven (simular to old time pizza parlor type)
>convert down spout to water storage
>Make list of preps, long term/non food( soap, paper plates, TP,games for daughter, toothpaste, first aid kit, etc.)
>put flood light up on back corner of house that does not have one (make plan for when power goes out, what then)
>SPEND TIME with wife and daughter, preps and research rob me of this more than I thought would.

Sounds like both of your problems are mutually inclusive.

Tell Hubby: Here is the to do list until you find a job.

Some things will get done on your list, and he will be looking for job post haste.

I have been doing that for a year or more! He is more than happy to do it! I just keep buying supplies and storing them as his list is growing longer and longer! Already he needs to build a new shed to keep the lawn mower in, another shed, which will be a chicken coop on one side and a goat milking area on the other side. Install our baby solar system. Hook up the wood cook stove, finish all the raised beds, build new beds for the berry plants, ect.

I did get one thing on my list taken care of this weekend! Can you guess what it is?

Re: survival " to do " list

My son said she looked like camouflage, so we named her Cammy.
She had her babies about 5 days later and one is a yellow color and the other is black, so they got the names, Buttercup and Spook. Cammy is a sweet goat, however her teats are so small that its going to be really hard to milk her. I was disappointed! Hopefully Buttercup will fill my hand!

Thanks for all your suggestions!

O/T: Ima, between your avatar & your sig I'm confused. Are you standing out? Or just outstanding in your field?

Just curious.

The one that does not follow the rest of the flock. So I guess I would be standing out. Dont know that I am outstanding in any field, more like a jack of all trades!

That's great. Just don't be a target, (which is how I read your sig).
